Taking on the patent trolls
There are a growing number of companies who've built a business model around threatening others business with patent legislation in order to extract settlements based on questionable claims. They're called patent trolls, and they're costing the economy billions of dollars and undermining American innovation.
So yesterday, President Obama took a step to tackle the issue head on. He issued five executive actions and seven legislative recommendations designed to protect innovators from unnecessary litigation and improve the quality patents in our system. Read more about that here.
In the last two years, the number of lawsuits brought by patent trolls has nearly tripled, and account for 62 percent of all patent lawsuits in America. All told, the victims of patent trolls paid $29 billion in 2011, a 400 percent increase from 2005 — not to mention tens of billions dollars more in lost shareholder value.
Those are huge numbers, but they're abstract. And we want to be able to talk about this debate means for real people. So tell us how patent reform would benefit businesses and spark innovation in your community, and you'll help to build support for this issue.
