Japanese is very symbolic and context heavy. 日 by itself is "Day", and 月 by itself is "Night", together without other context they make 明, or "Light" in simple transation, or if you add a number next to it it means a specific day, or both in a context means a date with the day and month. Also if you take the 日 (day) and set it next to 本 (book) to make 日本, it means Japan. That's how Japanese works.
