"В этом году премия была вручена сразу пяти авторам. В общей категории победителем стал Цутому Нихэй за набравший популярность в последнюю пару лет космогаремник "Рыцари Сидонии" (жур. Afternoon). Увы, чтобы сериализоваться в аниме и получить престижную награду, нужно было отказаться от гнетущих киберпанков в угоду истории о любовном треугольнике между человеком, гермафродитом и гибридом Гауны с химерой."

Manga and the Manga-esque: New Perspectives to a Global Culture

DATES: 22-25 January, 2015
VENUE: Ateneo de Manila University, Manila

OVERVIEW:
In the recent years, academic scholarship towards popular culture has been increasing. But why study Manga? Like all forms of popular culture, the consumption of such can produce social norms, establish social boundaries, and create rituals that generate social solidarity, generate innovation, and pave the way for social change, becoming a powerful and oft ignored media. The Japanese Government has realized this potential and has been using manga and anime as part of its soft power diplomacy. Recently, South Korea has been doing the same with K-pop and K-drama. Furthermore, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs has begun a campaign using Filipino komiks and animation. But none of these media have the same influence as manga. Manga, a Japanese term, which has now been accepted not only to refer to the comics published in Japan, but to also refer to works published in the various localities which derive their inspiration from that coming from Japan. While there have been several conferences and scholarship dealing with the topic of manga, the literature is quite divided between the lines of Western-based and Japanese-based scholarship. The Philippines becomes an interesting setting for a conference on manga, with its hybridized culture. The conference will not only provide fresh perspectives towards the study of manga, but will include studies of the manga-esque. The study of the manga-esque not only provides a peek towards Japan's influence to the local culture, but also provides a peak towards the cultural negotiations of their creators to their local culture. The proposed conference would invite distinguished manga scholars from Japan and the world, which will then provide fresh perspectives in studying manga as a global culture"

"— нецензурированную обложку к пятому тому «Повелителей терний». Дело в том, что на этой обложке в оригинале присутствует женская грудь с сосками. В обычные книжные магазины обложка пойдет с цензурированной версией, без сосков, но для предзаказа и аниме-магазинов мы напечатаем версию без цензуры."

Well, originally I wanted to do storyboarding for Disney’s Feature Animation division, and I was in fact all setup to jump right in after I graduated from SCAD, but I think it was around 2003 when the company dropped their 2D department in favor of doing lousy CG movies. I was not (and still am not) a fan of totally CG animated movies, and since at the time the whole industry was going belly-up as animation studios closed their doors and others quickly tried to master 3D lighting, I decided to go another route. In 2004 I moved to Japan and started attending a school for making manga, because all I wanted to do was tell stories with sequential art. This was just another way to do that without the end result being poopy CG puppets.
When I went to other publishers, people kept telling me I was too old… at 26. Japan likes young artists they can mold, and I have actually found that the better I get, the less interested editors have become. When I was younger and terrible, I had several bites. Now that I’m exponentially better at what I do, people tell me I’m great but don’t seem interested in giving me jobs. The fact that I’m a foreigner doesn’t help. The feedback I’ve gotten from editors (I’d say I’ve been to about 30 since coming to Japan) has always been mixed, but most guys I’ve met with have been pretty young and it doesn’t seem they have any idea what they are talking about. When I asked one guy if there was anything I could work on, he told me “Practice drawing every day.” Clearly, I’m not a beginner. Clearly I’ve been doing this for a while. But he wasn’t equipped to handle more advanced artists, and that was the best advice he could give.

HS-Scans – Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso 18
Waiting sucks. Hearing that the current scanlation group for this series has chapters 18-30 translated but stuck in the pipeline makes us really sad. How are so many scanlators so slow and so incompetent?
This is our first time scanlating manga. We’re only doing this to spread our love for the work, just like how we fansub 50 series a week. It took the two of us no more than a few hours to get this done from translation to release. However, I dare say our translations are top-notch, unlike a lot of the absolute horseshit we’ve all read. Scanlating is easy, unlike subtitling anime. Come on.
We found a few people. If you’re interested, feel free to shoot an email so we can msg you if we need more help. Join/idle on the IRC community!
The release post is here. Enjoy.
